Musicha - XVI of Mantegna Tarot

Musicha - XVI

Music

Music and arithmetic were seen as two different instances of the same principle - while arithmetic dealt with the numbers per se, music was thought to have a mathematical nature, being the expression of numbers using sound. Pythagoras in particular studied music under this premise. This explains the inclusion of music in the liberal arts.

The card shows Musicha playing her flute in company of a big swan, surrounded by a collection of instruments.
